One thing your dentist always checks for during your regular visits is cavities. Although the exam might reveal cavities you didn't know you had, tooth decay sometimes causes symptoms that are hard to ignore. Pay attention to the following signs of a cavity because skipping treatment could mean further decay or even tooth loss.

What Are the Signs You Could Have Tooth Decay

1. Pain

During your dental checkups, your dentist asks whether you have pain in your teeth because it's often a sign of cavities. As a cavity forms, it wears away tooth enamel, exposing nerve pathways in the softer tooth layers and causing pain. Sometimes cavity pain is a general toothache that doesn't go away, or pain that only appears when you put pressure on the tooth while eating or brushing.

2. Persistent Bad Breath

If you have halitosis or a bad taste in your mouth no matter how much you brush, use mouthwash, or chew gum, it's possible tooth decay could be the culprit. As your teeth decay, food particles and bacteria can get stuck, creating unpleasant odors.

3. Changes in Tooth Appearance

Your dentist will typically see changes to the appearance of your teeth, including black, brown, or chalky white spots or visible holes and pits, before you do. However, if you see anything unusual in your teeth during your normal oral hygiene routine, it's often a sign of decay and needs to be treated.

4. Sensitivity

If your teeth are sensitive to hot or cold, that's typically a sign that the enamel is deteriorating. As a cavity forms, you may experience mild to severe tooth sensitivity in the affected area. Often, the sensitivity starts unexpectedly and gets worse over time.
