As a parent, you want your teen to preserve their health. If you suspect they may be vaping or are concerned they might be tempted to try it, it’s important to relay health concerns surrounding the habit that might lead them to visit a pediatrician. There are many misconceptions because it’s still a newer product. Here's what parents should know about this action.

What Should Parents Know About Vaping?

1. Just Because It’s Less Harmful Than Smoking Doesn’t Mean It’s Safe

It’s true that vapes don’t contain the thousands of harmful chemicals found in cigarettes. However, this doesn’t mean that they’re safe. Vaping is still largely misunderstood. It hasn’t been around long enough for extensive clinical monitoring and testing, so the long-term health consequences aren’t yet clear. However, health providers and pediatricians have identified many unknown chemicals in e-juices, including caffeine, that may have a negative effect on your teen’s health.

2. It Still Affects Lung and Heart Health

Nicotine is toxic and increases your heart rate when your body experiences withdrawal. Vapes contain significant amounts of nicotine, so explain to your teen the cardiovascular consequences, such as high blood pressure. Also, speak with their pediatrician about lung health. While studies are ongoing, there is growing evidence linking vaping to asthma and other chronic lung issues.

3. It’s Addictive

Vapes and e-cigarettes contain the same nicotine that’s found in cigarettes. This is the addictive substance that makes vaping just as concerning as smoking tobacco. In many cases, vapes, which come in varying nicotine strengths, may have more nicotine than cigarettes, making them even more addictive. High-voltage vapes also deliver larger doses of nicotine. Explain to your teen the financial and mental health consequences of addiction.
