With their tried-and-true operating system and advanced hardware, Mac® computers are some of the most reliable machines on the market. However, software glitches and other issues can cause your computer to crash, interrupting your workflow and potentially resulting in lost data. Here are some of the most common reasons your Apple® device may be crashing.

What Makes a Mac Crash?

1. Incompatible Software

MacOS® operating system updates maximize the efficiency of your computer and protect your system from malware. However, some of your apps may no longer run properly if they aren’t compatible with the OS updates. The conflict between an outdated program and your Apple device can put too much strain on the processor and cause it to crash.

If your computer keeps freezing, check the App Store® to ensure all your programs are up to date. Even updated programs can have coding mistakes that make them incompatible with newer operating systems. If a particular app seems to frequently trigger a freeze, you may want to consider uninstalling it if an update doesn't work.

2. Poor Ventilation

Computer processors and circuits generate enough heat to damage delicate components if it isn’t dissipated quickly. If the fans that draw cool air into the computer’s interior aren’t working properly, the machine will automatically shut down to prevent overheating.

These crashes may be caused by an issue with the fan motor, but usually the air intake is clogged with lint and dust. If the latter is the case, a computer repair shop can clean the fan, preventing future crashes without expensive repairs.

3. Insufficient RAM

Your computer uses RAM, or random access memory, to run applications and store data until it’s saved. Some programs hog more RAM than most, so older computers struggle to keep up.

Switching to a less resource-intensive alternative to RAM-hungry software can resolve the issue, but that isn’t always an option. Fortunately, adding RAM is usually a fairly simple upgrade that will often resolve your crashing issue.
