Apple® devices, such as smartphones, are frequently touched objects that often quickly become covered in fingerprints, grime, and microbes. Cleaning your iPhone® regularly can keep the screen clear and prevent the spread of germs and illness. Here's how to cleanse and disinfect your device.

4 Tips for Cleaning an iPhone

1. Unplug & Turn Off

Cleaning an iPhone while plugged in may expose the device to moisture, potentially causing electrical shock or a fire. Unplugging the Apple device in advance can promote safety. It's also a good idea to completely shut off the phone before wiping and disinfecting it. This may prevent you from accidentally opening apps, making calls, or sending messages during the cleaning process.

2. Wipe With a Gentle Cloth

If you have an iPhone XS or earlier, the manufacturer recommends using a lint-free cloth to clean the back, front, and sides of the device. If necessary, you may slightly dampen the cloth, which can assist with removing more stubborn fingerprints, smudges, and debris. For iPhone 11 and newer models, you might dip the cloth in warm, soapy water to eliminate grime and debris accumulations.

3. Wash & Disinfect

To disinfect the device, regardless of model, you can cleanse nonporous surfaces such as the display and keyboard with wipes that contain 70% isopropyl alcohol. Alternatively, you may create a solution of diluted alcohol and dip a microfiber cloth into it before cleaning your phone. You might also dip a cotton swab in the solution and run it along the edges and through crevices of the Apple product to ensure thorough disinfection.

4. Use Caution

While cleaning your phone, take care not to get moisture in cracks and crevices, as this might cause internal damage that compromises the function of the device. Avoiding using cleaning products, as these often contain corrosive chemicals that might deteriorate the display and cause discoloration. Additionally, don't use compressed air, as this may lodge debris further into small openings and clog or damage ports.
