Apple® devices are celebrated for their user-friendly interfaces, quick operating systems, and aesthetically pleasing appearances. However, like all electronics, their performance declines over time. When you have a new or refurbished MacBook®, you can extend its life span by practicing proper maintenance. With that in mind, here's a guide to whether you should completely shut down the device every night.

Sleep Mode

After using their laptops, most people simply close them so that the devices go into sleep mode. Typically, this is the preferred method since it's the fastest and most convenient way to resume using the device, as it quickly transitions back into full operation. In addition to allowing an immediate restart, sleep mode can be programmed remotely, scheduled, or naturally occur when the computer is idle.

Although putting the device to sleep every night instead of powering it down is convenient, the laptop will continue to consume minor amounts of power. Additionally, cache files won't get cleared, and software updates will not automatically install. You'll have to reboot manually to get the latest software and prevent lag times related to lack of maintenance.

Full Shut Down

Shutting down an Apple device takes a little more time than letting it go into sleep mode, and the restart won't be instant, either. Also, applications and documents have to close before the laptop turns off, which means you also have to reopen them when using the MacBook again.

That said, shutting down saves power, reduces hardware strain, clears the cache, and lets you get the latest software update. This practice is recommended when you know the device won't be used for an extended period. While completely shutting down the laptop is often unnecessary on a nightly basis, you should perform this task at least weekly.
