A leaking septic tank can lead to significant problems, including the contamination of the surrounding soil and sources of water. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to know when your tank is leaking, which is why professionals recommend routine inspections. In the meantime, the following signs can help you discover a leak sooner.

4 Signs Your Septic Tank is Leaking

1. Rapid Vegetation Growth

The sudden appearance of lush vegetation around the septic tank or in the drain field can indicate a leak. When the tank leaks, the water and waste can cause grass, weeds, and plants to grow more rapidly.

The overgrowth is usually a brighter green than the surrounding vegetation. If you see a patch of vivid green grass, you should clear the area of other obstacles to ensure a professional can access the tank for an inspection.

2. Contaminated Well Water

Residents with private water wells are often required to test their water regularly to ensure it remains free of chemical and bacterial contaminants. If the tests reveal coliform bacteria or the presence of nitrates, your well water has probably been contaminated by a leaking tank. Stop consuming the water immediately and call a professional to inspect the septic system and water well.

3. Foul Odors

Septic TankIf you smell foul odors coming from the drains or the yard, you may have a leaking tank. In some cases, the container may be leaking because it’s full and needs to be pumped.

If the odor is only present outdoors near the tank and drain field, this can still indicate a leak. Under normal circumstances, all unpleasant odors should be kept in the system.

4. Standing Water

If the tank has been leaking for a considerable amount of time, you’ll probably notice standing water. Normal rainwater should be absorbed by the ground, so a large amount of moisture indicates that the surrounding soil is oversaturated. Even if you haven’t noticed any other signs of a septic system problem, you should call a professional to take a look at the tank.
