When you’re on vacation, many of the rules of everyday life don’t apply. Late bedtimes and sleeping in, ice cream for dinner and lounging on the beach or by the pool all day are all part of the joys of vacation. However, even when you’re on a holiday and staying in a hotel room, the rules of etiquette still apply. Here are some reminders for your next getaway that will help you mind your manners.

4 Tips for a Courteous Hotel Stay

1. Check in & out on Time

When you stay in a hotel, you’re asked to check in and out at certain times so the staff can ready the room for the next guests. There’s nothing wrong with requesting different times beforehand, and the hotel will try to accommodate your request. But if they can’t, arrive or leave when requested as a courtesy to other guests.

2. Dress Appropriately

Casual beachwear is the primary dress code in Hawaii’s tourist areas. While wearing your swimsuit around the pool and beach is common, it’s polite to throw on a cover-up outside of these areas. Also, consider who is staying at the hotel or resort when choosing a swimsuit. Staying at a family-oriented hotel may call for more modest swimwear, for instance, whereas more revealing suits would be fine at adult-only properties.

3. Keep It Quiet

When you travel to Hawaii, especially from the East Coast, you’ll likely wake up early while your body adjusts to island time. If you’re awake before the sun comes up, be mindful of how much noise you make in your hotel room. Instead of turning on the television, take the opportunity for a sunrise walk on the beach, or head out for an early breakfast.

4. Follow the Pool Rules

hotel roomHotels have rules for the pool area to ensure all guests are safe and comfortable. If you aren't sure of the rules, ask the lifeguard or front desk attendant. Generally speaking, though, when using a hotel pool, keep these tips in mind:

  • Don’t smoke in non-smoking areas.
  • Don’t use spray sunscreen near other people.
  • Keep cell phone conversations short and quiet.
  • Don’t “save” loungers with personal items for longer than 30 minutes.
  • Don’t use flotation devices when they aren’t permitted.
  • Use headphones for music or electronic devices.
  • Supervise your children.
