Surfing is a staple of Hawaiian culture and a must-try activity if you’re visiting Oahu. Once you’ve booked your hotel, look into the nearby beaches you want to check out before you arrive. Here are some of the most popular beaches for beginner surfers.

Where to Surf on Oahu for Beginners

1. White Plains

First-time surfers love White Plains because the break is close to the shore, so you don’t have to paddle as much and are less likely to injure yourself on sharp reefs when you fall.

The A-frame waves break left, right, and straight, allowing you to familiarize yourself with different directions. This is also ideal if you have a few rides under your belt and want to expand your skillset.

The beach has on-site surf lessons and rentals, and their picnicking spots are perfect for takeout meals or family members to relax while others ride the waves. White Plains is located 30 minutes west of Honolulu and an easy drive from many hotels.

2. Chun’s Reef

hotelsChun’s Reef is located on the North Shore and known for its dense, right-breaking waves. Rides end in a calm channel where you can relax between waves, plus the smaller break is closer to shore.

On-site surf schools welcome beginners. Guests can also enjoy a wide sandy beach in front of the park—great for small children who aren’t old enough to surf with their siblings.

If you want to learn from the experts, watch advanced riders on the larger break further out. Note that waves become much bigger between October and March, so schedule your surfing plans accordingly.

3. Waikiki Beach

Beginners flock to Oahu’s iconic Waikiki Beach to enjoy multiple breaks. The beach has many parts stretching the coast. Canoes is ideal for longboarding and offers long rides that break left and right. The reef is also deep underwater and won’t create obstructions.

Populars, also called “Pops,” is further from shore. Paddling further out is worth it for a longer ride.

The famous Queens break is located in calm waters perfect for long- and shortboard beginners and is also the closet to hotels, shopping, and dining.

If you’re organizing a trip to Oahu, book a stay at The Breakers Hotel. Located in Honolulu, this hotel is half a block from Waikiki Beach and has on-site dining and amenities for the whole family.
