From lubricating the components to protecting them from the elements, several fluids are necessary for a vehicle to function optimally. It's important to check on them regularly and refill them or have a mechanic flush and replenish them for you. Here are a few fluids that need to be checked routinely and why.

4 Fluids That Should Be Checked in Your Vehicle

1. Motor Oil

mechanic

The motor oil protects the engine components from creating too much friction and wearing each other down. To check it, park the vehicle on a flat surface and wait at least an hour after use, so the engine has the chance to cool down. Pop the hood, pull the dipstick out, wipe it off, push it back in, and pull it out again for an accurate reading. The level should be within the range of the markings on the dipstick. The fluid should be light brown or golden and be thin enough to drip. If it’s dark or too thick to drip, take it to a mechanic for an oil change as soon as possible.

2. Antifreeze

The complex process by which all the components of a vehicle work together generates massive amounts of heat. Coolant prevents it from overheating. When the engine is cool, inspect the reservoir of antifreeze to see if it reaches the fill line. Add more as necessary and repeat the process at least every 50,000 miles.

3. Transmission Fluid

Whether the vehicle has a manual or automatic transmission, if the transmission fluid is running low, the gears can grind on each other, making it difficult to shift and causing damage. For older cars, there may be a dipstick to use to check its level. If so, measure it while it’s running in neutral instead of park. Have someone in the driver’s seat apply the brake. A mechanic will usually have to check the transmission fluid for newer vehicles.

4. Brake Fluid

A vehicle can’t stop properly without brake fluid. It should be checked every four to five years to ensure there’s enough and that it’s clean. There should be a removable cap, so you can see if the fluid is within a half inch from the top of the reservoir. If it’s black, it will need to be replaced by a mechanic.
