Dental implants are an effective way to replace one or more missing teeth permanently. The process begins with oral surgery to insert a tiny titanium rod into the gums, which becomes the abutment to hold an artificial tooth. Despite the effectiveness of this tooth-replacement option, dental implants have a complex recovery process, and certain foods can increase discomfort or lead to dental complications. Avoid these foods and drinks to ensure a complication-free recovery if you get implants.

What Are Some Foods You Shouldn't Eat After Dental Implant Surgery?

1. Hard Foods

After the oral surgery, your dentist will advise you to eat soft foods like oatmeal, scrambled eggs, and macaroni and cheese. These meal options are easily digestible and not likely to irritate the surgical site. However, hard foods like lollipops, nuts, popcorn, raw carrots, and apples can irritate your gums. You need at least two weeks of recovery before you can dine on these items.

2. Pigmented Beverages

Though black tea, coffee, and red wine likely won't cause discomfort, they are still problematic for dental implants after surgery. These drinks contain pigments that stain natural teeth over time. However, they can also discolor the artificial tooth attached to your implant.

It’s safe to occasionally enjoy these beverages, especially if you brush your teeth or rinse your mouth afterward. But drinking them frequently or in large quantities increases the risk of unsightly dental stains.

3. Chewy Foods

Your oral surgeon or dentist will likely put you on a no-chew diet for the week following your dental implant surgery. Eating soft foods like applesauce, soup, and protein shakes minimizes your jaw's chewing action.

Your jaw will be sore after the procedure, so chewing foods will be uncomfortable. It would be best to avoid items like thick pizza crusts, tough meat, and caramel candies to minimize your discomfort until you're healed.
