An older brick fireplace can lend rustic charm to your home, but this design feature isn’t for everyone. Many homeowners who wish to remodel and update their living room are uncertain about their options—if they even have any. As the fireplace makeover team at The Color Craftsmen in Saint Louis, MO, explains, drywalling over a fireplace is a sound remodeling option — as long as you have some professional help.

By installing drywall over your existing fireplace, you’re left with a smooth surface that is ready for paint and other decorations. This is a popular choice for homeowners who have decided they simply don’t want a fireplace anymore. (However, before completing this work, it may be worthwhile to consult a Realtor to learn how covering the fireplace will impact your home's resale value.)

Typically the drywall is installed using one of two methods. In some cases, a construction adhesive is used to glue the drywall to the bricks. Mounting the drywall with screws may take longer. You'll need a drill, masonry bits and masonry screws. Perhaps the best idea is to use glue and screws. Use a few screws to hold the drywall in place while the glue dries. This keeps the drywall from slipping – or worse, falling away from the brick.

Two alternate methods: plaster over the fireplace or use a product called Faster Plaster. It is burlap that is impregnated with gypsum. It is glued onto the surface and will cover the texture of brick.

If your remodeling work will completely cover over your existing fireplace, there are some other important issues to consider. Your remodeling team will need to pay close attention to insulation and venting. Otherwise, there exists a risk of moisture getting trapped in the fireplace, resulting in mold growth or deteriorating brick and mortar.

To ensure this doesn’t happen, you will have to seal off several areas to prevent water, cold air, and pests from entering the home: The top and bottom of the chimney, the flue damper, and the firebox will all need to be sealed to prevent these home maintenance concerns.

Finally, perhaps your goal is to beautify the space and your fireplace presents an obstacle to that goal. Please consider consulting with the Color Craftsmen to learn what other options there are for your particular circumstance. We have successfully changed the color of brick without making it look painted; we have made brick and wood look like stone, we have altered tile and changed the color of marble. Perhaps there is something we could do to make your fireplace one that you could love.

No matter how you wish to upgrade your fireplace, the team at The Color Craftsmen will help your home look its best. To learn more about their interior design services or to request a quote, visit them online or call (314) 313-1495.
