A cataract is a clouding-over of the lens of the eye. This condition tends to develop gradually over the course of many years, usually starting when a person is in their 40s or 50s but not displaying noticeable symptoms until one is in their 60s. To ensure you receive prompt treatment, here are four common symptoms to look for.
Signs of Cataracts
1. Blurry Vision
Cataracts are caused by proteins in the lens starting to stick together. This often results in less-clear vision, with blurriness, cloudiness, or filminess being common signs. You might also notice colors are less bright than they once were, and since the lens often yellows with this condition, everything in your visual field might take on a yellowish wash. The visual disturbances won't go away by rubbing your eyes or squinting.
2. Difficulty Seeing in the Dark
As the lens proteins start to clump together, they will block light from entering your eye and getting to the retina. In dim or dark conditions, light is already minimal, so you may have increasing trouble navigating dark rooms or driving at night. If it's becoming harder to decipher road conditions and traffic signs when driving in the dark, see your eye doctor right away. Cataracts can often be removed, reducing the risk of a car accident by more than 60 percent.
3. Visual Halos
When light hits the lens, the gathered proteins can cause it to scatter in different directions. This results in halos or auras around light sources. This too can make night driving more dangerous, as you will be less able to make out streetlights and headlights.
4. Light Sensitivity
If you find yourself squinting or shying away from bright lights, cataracts could be to blame. The sensitivity can sometimes be downright painful, especially if you have subcapsular cataracts, which form at the back of the lens.
