When the weather starts to cool down, space heaters are like convenient, modern versions of fireplaces—especially because you can move them wherever you like. Whether you’re using these fixtures on their own or supplementing your central heating system, it's important to position them safely and efficiently. Use these three arrangement tips to keep your family and guests warm during the cooler months.

3 Tips for Positioning Your Space Heaters

1. Choose the Right Room

Space heaters work by radiating warmth, so you’ll only feel warmer when you’re standing near one. The further you are from a space heater, and the larger the space is, the more the heat will diffuse and get weaker. It’s best to place space heaters in smaller rooms with the doors closed.

If you were to place one in the center of an open-plan living area, you might not feel the warmth much at all. If you need to position it in a larger room, make sure it’s close to the chair, sofa, or workstation where you’ll be spending most of your time.

2. Consider Electrical Hazards

If you need to use one outside, make sure it is designed for outdoor use. If you’re enjoying a meal or serving drinks around the space heater, position it far enough away from the dining or living area that it won’t be vulnerable to spills.

3. Reduce the Risk of Fires

Since heat is one of the main catalysts for fires, you'll need to consider the objects that will be nearest to your space heater when it's operating. Materials like curtains, dishcloths, and clothing may be flammable, so it’s important to position your space heater at least 10 feet from these objects.

While this might rule out the center of the room, it’s just as important to keep your space heater at least a few feet away from the wall. Too much heat ricocheting against the drywall, paint, or wallpaper could start a fire.
