Propane is an eco-friendly, affordable energy alternative you can use year-round. It’s important to remember that it’s a highly combustible gas and that the weather can affect the tank when you aren’t careful. Summer heat, especially, can be concerning. Here are several safety tips for storing your tank and using propane during the summer months.

How to Store Propane Safely This Summer

1. Store the Tank in a Safe Place

Extreme summer temperatures cause the liquid propane to shrink, reducing the internal pressure of the tank. Store your tank in a cool space under a tarp to prevent this temperature effect.

2. Keep the Tank Upright

Always keep propane tanks upright when using or storing them. This ensures the relief valve can properly detect the vapor around it. The safety valve can then also properly release propane if too much pressure collects inside. It’s also important to remember that propane is in liquid form inside the container. When stored on its side, the liquid could leak out and soak into materials, creating a fire hazard.

3. Don’t Use Propane Near Your Home

While propane only emits a small, concentrated flame on gas grills, it’s still not safe to grill near your home. Grill at least 10 feet away from your home during the summer to ensure nothing ignites building materials. If it’s been an especially dry summer, ensure there’s no risk of igniting dry grass around the grill either. Ideally, keep your grill on a hardscape.
