Depending on your needs and the size of your household, a standard propane tank can provide fuel for weeks or even months at a time. However, with use, the fuel level will slowly decrease, making it important to understand when to schedule a new delivery. Here are a few signs that your tank is running low and should be refilled.

Is It Time to Refill Your Propane Tank?

1. The Gauge Shows a Low Reading

Standard propane tanks come fitted with a gauge showing how full it is at a glance. Most gauges have color-coded faces, with a large green section showing sufficient levels, yellow indicating decreasing levels, and red indicating that the tank is empty or nearly empty. If you see that the needle is sitting in either the yellow or red sections, or that it’s moved counter-clockwise to the far side of the dial, it’s time to refill it.

2. It Feels Light

When stored in tanks and bottles, propane is in a liquid state. As such, you can get a rough idea of how full a tank is based on weight. A full tank should be heavier, harder to lift and move, and grow lighter the longer it’s in use. If you can pick it up easily, the level has dropped and it should be refilled. Only lift a tank when it’s fully disconnected from your grill or other appliance, and always use two hands to lift it by the built-in grips surrounding the valve and gauge assembly.

3. You Can’t Power Propane-Fueled Appliances

If you try to light your propane-powered grill or stove only to find that the flame sputters and dies after a few seconds, or if it won’t light at all, it’s time to schedule a fuel delivery. Continuing to try to light a flame with a low or empty tank will only waste time, and may even lead to unnecessary wear and tear.
