Propane is a clean-burning, colorless, odorless, natural gas. It is stored in tanks or cylinders and burned as fuel. It is a byproduct of refining oil or processing natural gas, so it is a petroleum product. If you are unfamiliar with the product, below are answers to questions that many people have.

What Homeowners Should Know About Propane

What Is Propane Used For?

Propane is an effective and economical fuel for all types of household uses. Homeowners often use it for heating purposes, for example, to run their furnace, water heater, and boiler. It also makes an efficient cooking fuel for ovens and stovetops.

Portable propane cylinders are ideal for camping and RVs, outdoor grills, and powering generators. It is a good alternative to gasoline and natural gas in many situations.

Are Propane Tanks Safe?

Propane is flammable, but tanks are safe when treated properly. Don't smoke or operate an open flame around your tank or cylinder. Store tanks outdoors where the gas can dissipate in case of a possible leak.

Because combustion can result in carbon monoxide production, only burn propane outdoors or in a well-ventilated space. Have only experienced professionals repair the tank, cylinder, or propane appliance.

Can You Paint Your Tank to Match Your House?

It depends on the color of your house. Section NFPA 58 of the liquid propane gas code requires tanks to be painted in heat-reflected colors. Dark colors absorb heat and increase the risk of a tank ignition. Light colors, on the other hand—white, light-gray, cream, yellow, etc.—reflect light and heat, and are thus permitted.

What Should You Do If You Detect a Strange Odor?

Propane is naturally odorless, but producers add a chemical to give it a distinctive scent. If you notice a sulfuric or rotten eggs odor, turn off the supply valve and get everyone away from the tank.

Consider leaving the house entirely if you can. Contact your propane supplier or, if they are unavailable, call the police. Return only when the authorities tell you the area is safe.
