Summer is the perfect time to cook outdoors with friends and family. To ensure you get quality use out of it, you will first need to hook up your propane tank. Know the process so your grill will safely have the fuel it needs to cook a meal for the whole family.

Guide to Connecting Propane to a Grill

1. Inspect the Tank

Begin by looking at the tank for signs of damage or corrosion. Any rust, dents, or other visible issues mean you should not use the container. Look closely at its gasket, since they will warp or split after time in storage. If the tank looks to be in stable condition, you’re ready to use it.

2. Create a Secure Connection

Completely close the tank’s valvepropane by turning the handwheel clockwise. Do the same with all the valves on your grill. Remove the cap on the basin if it has one, and then attach the appliance connector to the tank.  Turn it as firmly as it will go, checking that the threads line up.

3. Check for Leaks

Mix one cup of water with a squirt of liquid dish soap. Apply the soapy solution with a sponge to the entire top of the tank. This area includes around the point of connection, at the pressure relief valve, and under the liquid level indicator. Turn the handwheel to the open position and look for bubbles. If you see bubbles appearing, there is a leak. Turn the handwheel closed, then call your gas company for help. If no bubbles appear, you are leak-free and ready to grill.
