In addition to taking your kid to the family dentist twice a year, you’ll need to practice dental care at home to ensure a healthy smile. While most young children know how to brush their teeth, they don’t always have an easy time with floss. Review the following guide to help your little one perform this vital oral care step correctly.

What Are the Benefits of Flossing?

Flossing cleans between each tooth and under the gumline, two areas of the mouth the toothbrush cannot reach. The practice prevents food particles from lingering in the mouth, providing sustenance for the bacteria in plaque. As the microorganisms feed, they release acids that wear down the enamel and irritate the soft tissue.

Due to the effects of the bacteria, plaque buildup contributes to tooth decay and gum disease. Without daily removal, it can also harden into tartar. This dental calculus forms under the gumline and is only removable by a family dentist or dental hygienist.

Luckily, flossing reduces your child’s risk of cavities and gum health problems. It also keeps their primary or baby teeth healthy, which serve as placeholders for adult ones to erupt correctly.

How Do You Floss Your Child’s Teeth?

Flossing your child’s teeth requires waiting until their primary molars erupt, usually between ages 2 and 3. Depending on what item your little one is more comfortable with, use a floss pick or 18 inches of floss. Kids often enjoy using the former since the plastic holders come in various colors and can have kid-friendly shapes, such as dinosaurs.

Gently move the floss between teeth and carefully make a C-shape around them to clean below the gumline. These motions should be utilized even if your child’s teeth don’t yet touch each other. Continue flossing for them until they grow older and get the hang of it.

Along with flossing, your child can maintain good oral health by visiting Steven A. Kumasaka, DDS, in Kaneohe, HI, every six months.
