When you brush your teeth, you should be getting a healthier smile and thorough teeth cleaning. Unfortunately, toothbrushes need to be replaced, and if yours is old, you may be spreading the bristle’s bacteria around the mouth. Here are a few signs that indicate it’s time for a new brush.

How Do I Know If I Need a New Toothbrush?

1. It’s Old

Toothbrushes aren’t designed to last forever, so start shopping for a new one after three to four months of use. To keep track of the months, mark the brush handle with the date you started using it. Since professional teeth cleanings are scheduled every six months, sync your brush replacements with the appointments so that you can use the free brush from the dentist.

2. You Were Sick

To prevent the bristles from reintroducing these bacteria to your system, throw away your toothbrush once you recover, even if it’s from another illness, like the common cold or strep throat.

3. The Bristles Are Frayed

Frayed bristles can harm your teeth and gums because it can be challenging to control their movements as you brush. If you use a toothbrush with damaged bristles, the fibers won’t go where they need to, and you may cause gum abrasions or dental erosion. Replace your toothbrush as soon as your bristles start bending.
