Resurfacing a pool involves removing and replacing the top layer to restore appearance, smoothness, and safety. Plaster and cement pools need to be resurfaced every three to seven years to ensure their condition and longevity, while fiberglass pools can go as long as 15 years without needing a surface replacement. Below, learn about the process and benefits of pool resurfacing.

What Is the Process?

Before a pool can be resurfaced, the water must be fully drained. Once empty, the old surface is removed, and the new surface is applied, which typically entails the installation of new masonry, tiles, and grout. Then, the plumbing is resealed to guarantee it is watertight and well protected.

The pool resurfacing work is complete with the addition of a finishing material, like aggregates, pebbles, quartz, or additional tiles. Now, you can refill the pool, but it shouldn't be used for at least seven days or until given the go-ahead by your resurfacing provider, as the new installation needs time to fully cure.

What Are the Benefits?

Resurfacing breathes new life into your pool and, by extension, your whole property. It gets rid of unsightly stains, rust spots, and erosion marks, and with the variety of finishing options available, it transforms the look of your pool and deck area. Natural river stones, Mediterranean-inspired tiles, and ceramic-coated crystals are just a few cosmetic upgrades available.

It improves safety, too. Over time, pool chemicals can erode the surface, leaving rough spots behind. These areas can be uncomfortable to walk on and can even cause cuts or abrasions. A new surface eliminates them and gives you a smooth surface that's comfortable underfoot.

If your old surface had cracks in it, there's a chance you were losing water, which may have required vigilant refilling. Your new surface will be free of cracks and other damage and better able to hold water, saving you time, hassle, and the cost of mounting water bills.
