Navigating snowy roads poses a challenge for beginners and longtime drivers alike. That’s why it’s crucial to take some precautions to ensure that you stay safe on the road during inclement weather. From swapping your tires to increasing your following distance, here are some tips to help you stay safe.

How to Stay Safe When Driving in the Snow

1. Expand Your Following Distance

You need more time to react when it’s snowing outside. Not only can the flakes decrease your visibility, but moisture on the ground could cause your vehicle to skid as you press on the brakes. Aim to keep at least six seconds of distance between you and the vehicle in front of you, expanding the distance if visibility worsens. This buys you some more time to come to a safe stop when necessary.

2. Swap for Winter Tires

Your year-round tires will become brittle when temperatures drop, leaving them less capable of handling slick surfaces. By contrast, winter tires are designed with softer, more pliable rubber. That helps the material negotiate the road and handle inclement conditions more efficiently. Added traction ensures better ground grip, helping you feel more secure when you’re driving on a slick or slushy surface. For best results, replace all four tires to ensure even wear and tear.

3. Check Tire Pressure Often

For every 10 degrees Fahrenheit that the temperature drops, tires can lose up to 1 pound per square inch of pressure. Low-pressure tires leave you at risk of experiencing a dangerous blowout, so it's vital to check the pressure regularly and add air to your tires as needed.
