Severe winter storms can bring a variety of hazards to your farm and livestock. High winds, blowing snow, severe cold, and falling tree branches can cause harm to farm animals. Hazardous road conditions could make it impossible to quickly get more animal feed and other essential farm supplies. Here are some precautions to help keep your animals safe in a blizzard.

3 Tips for Preparing Your Farm for a Blizzard

1. Prepare Your Equipment

Ensuring your farm equipment is prepared for snow and cold can allow you to check on your livestock and get them the help they need as quickly as possible after a storm. In addition to performing a full maintenance check and refueling your trucks and other equipment, be sure to switch to snow tires, which provide better traction in snowy and icy conditions.

2. Stock Up on Animal Feed

Depending on the severity of the storm, you may not be able to get to your livestock for several days. Make sure there is adequate animal feed and water available to keep them healthy for the duration of the storm. Stock up so there is enough food and water for each animal. This can add up quickly, as beef cattle consume an average of 15 to 30 pounds of feed per day.

3. Ensure Adequate Shelter

A strong, sturdy shelter that protects your livestock from the elements can keep them from freezing during a blizzard. These structures should provide warm bedding, with enough space for each animal to get shelter from wind and snow. If the animals graze in an area without nearby structures, make sure their pasture has large brush areas where they can gather for shelter and warmth.
