Your auto battery is the heart of your car. Without it, you can’t turn on the engine, heating and cooling system, and other features and accessories. Like all components, it needs proper care. To preserve your battery’s life span and efficiency, use the following maintenance tips.

How to Care for Your Car Battery

1. Check the Case & Tray

You should regularly check that your battery is securely held in the built-in tray. If it jostles around, it can become damaged and connectors may loosen. This is especially problematic when driving on bumpy, uneven roads. Look to see that screws and other hardware aren’t worn and apply pressure to make sure they’re secure.

Check the battery’s case as well. If there are cracks or visible damage, acid leaks may occur. If anything seems suspicious, take your vehicle to an auto shop for an inspection.

2. Clean the Terminals

One tablespoon of baking soda in a cup of water will get the job done. First, undo the battery cables. Next, use a toothbrush to scrub the solution around the terminals. You can then rinse with water and dry with a rag.

Doing this will prevent corrosion and other problems. You can add petroleum jelly to the terminals to strengthen the connection.

3. Add an Insulation Blanket

Cold weather is devastating to car batteries. At 32 degrees Fahrenheit, car batteries lose 35% of their strength. At 0 degrees, they lose 60%. Starting your engine can take twice the amount of energy. Protect yours by applying an insulated wrap.
