Concrete is a popular material for constructing a sturdy foundation, providing a lengthy lifespan of up to 100 years and requiring minimal maintenance. 3 Tips for Laying a Concrete Foundation

1. Form the Footing

Start by creating a flat surface for the installation. Clear away any leaves, grass, and other outdoor debris, and mark the measurements of the shed with a few pieces of twine.

Once you verify that there are no underground pipes, rent a backhoe to dig out the foundation. Lay rebar along the base of the hole and set grade pins about two feet apart to ensure stability. Pour a layer of concrete that’s about one foot thick, and smooth out the surface.

2. Set the Frame

Secure enough building equipment to maintain the concrete’s shape after the initial pour. Measure the depth of the foundation and cut the materials to size. Set the pieces side-by-side around the perimeter of the hole.

Place another row around the inside of the frame to create a trough. Once everything is secure, mix the concrete and pour it within the boards to create a foundational wall. Leave it to cure for approximately 48 hours before removing the frames.

3. Pour the Foundation

Spread a layer of gravel or sand along the base of the foundation, and rake to even out the surface. Install a polyethylene sheet on top to prevent evaporating moisture from affecting the concrete.

Next, set a layer of wire mesh and rebar and mix the concrete until it reaches the right consistency. Pour the material into the hole and smooth out the surface. Give it seven days to cure before finishing the rest of the project.
