If you rely on heating oil to maintain a comfortable home during the winter, you know how important it is to maintain your tank and all of the system’s related components. A fuel filter is responsible for eliminating any contaminants and water from the oil as it passes through to the heating appliance. However, this part can become clogged with buildup over time. Here's how to tell if yours is blocked and how to replace it.
What Causes Oil Filter Clogs?
Think of the filter as a sponge. Its primary job is to trap any debris that the heating oil might contain. The more this buildup accumulates, the less efficiently it can do its job over time. That forces some of the undesired debris to flow through the filter and into the furnace. This can also cause the spray nozzle to become clogged, preventing the ignition required for your heating system to function.
How Can You Tell if it’s Clogged?
If the furnace is sluggish to start or rumbles and pauses at the outset, there may not be enough oil passing through the filter for ignition. Watch for signs that the system is cycling on and off, as this could be indicative of a blockage in the spray nozzle. If this happens, you may need to start it manually.
Finally, be mindful of dark smoke emanating from the chimney. This is a sign that water is passing through the filter into the spray nozzle, which occurs when the filter is clogged and can no longer trap debris.
How Do You Replace the Filter?
Aim to replace the filter at least once or twice every year to ensure that your system runs efficiently. Begin by turning off the power supply to the furnace for safety. Place a bucket or another container below so you can catch any oil that might drip while you replace the filter.
Turn off the shut-off valve to prevent spillage, then remove the filter’s canister base. Now you can detach the old filter and put it in a plastic bag for safe disposal. Next, wipe down the canister to remove any debris. Then, slide the new cartridge in place and reassemble the canister base. Tighten the bolt on top of the canister, then reopen the shut-off valve and switch the power back on.
