Keyless entry is an increasingly common feature in vehicles. This type of system employs a fob key that uses wireless signals to unlock a car when the driver is within a few feet of it. Unfortunately, it can also come with some risks, as potential car thieves may be able to manipulate this signal to gain access to a vehicle. If you have a vehicle with keyless entry, it's a good idea to think about theft prevention. Here are a few steps you can take to minimize your risk.

How to Protect Your Vehicle if You Have a Keyless Entry System

1. Reduce Signal Output

Since your system relies on the use of radio frequencies to transmit its signal, it's helpful to shield that signal from being sent out and intercepted. Faraday cages, named after famed inventor Michael Faraday, do just that with a variety of container types, such as bags.

The entire fob key can be kept inside a Faraday bag when not in use to block wireless signals. These accessories are relatively inexpensive and easy to find. Some modern fobs are equipped with the option to turn the wireless feature off entirely without the need for additional equipment.

2.  Park Wisely

Car theft is often a crime of opportunity. Parking in areas that are dark and secluded will minimize the chances of a criminal being seen, and leaving valuables inside can give them a reason to attempt theft. Both of these can embolden a potential thief.

For this reason, it's wise to be cautious about where you leave your car. When possible, choose well-lit areas with more foot traffic. If you have a garage, use it as an additional barrier when you're home. Handbags or backpacks should always be removed or hidden since they could be perceived as having money or valuables inside.

3. Reprogram the Fob

If you misplace one of your fob keys, there's always a chance that someone else has found it and now has a way to easily access your vehicle. In this case, consider reprogramming so that the lost key no longer works.

This act is similar to changing your password on a computer. It's smart to take the same measure if you're buying a used vehicle and want to be sure you're the only one with access to the vehicle.
