Modern cars use advanced technology to take security to new levels while also making it easier to unlock doors and start engines. Depending on the model of car, you may have a smart key with an embedded chip, a small remote control fob, a proximity fob, or a combination. Because this technology uses computer chips instead of a mechanical lock and key, it’s not as simple to duplicate or rekey. In many cases, a locksmith service will need to help with this issue, but you may be able to handle it yourself. Here's a closer look.

How Does a Locksmith Reprogram a Smart Key?

To program new keys for your car and remove old ones, a locksmith will need access to the car, specifically the OBD port beneath the dashboard. Using a specially designed computer with software from the auto manufacturer, they’ll connect with the car’s computer to program the keys. This allows them to erase keys that have been lost, stolen, or broken. They can also pair new smart keys with the car and create copies.

Can You Do It Yourself?

This depends on the make and model of your car. Some systems are set up to allow you to add programmable keys by simply placing your existing keys in the ignition, then switching to the new key. Detailed instructions are provided with the programmable key system.

However, not all cars are set up to allow additional keys to be programmed this way, and this method doesn't allow you to remove old keys from the system. This can be especially problematic if your manufacturer has placed a limit on the number of smart keys you can have paired with your car at one time.

If you need to remove old keys, or if your car doesn’t support existing programmable key systems, you can only make the changes you need by using the same software a locksmith would use. There are a number of different systems that are compatible with some vehicles but not others. The software for older models tends to be more affordable than newer systems. For these reasons, it's typically simpler and more cost-effective to visit a locksmith.
