Fob keys are an important part of most modern cars, granting drivers the option to open or secure their vehicles conveniently and from a distance. However, like any automotive component or system, these can break down for several reasons. Whatever the cause, this can be a frustrating experience, so take a look at why this happens to determine how to regain access to your vehicle.

Why Has Your Fob Key Stopped Working?

1. Radio Interference

Automotive key fobs work by issuing a radio signal to communicate with the locking mechanism in a vehicle. If there are background radio signals around you, your fob may not be able to transmit signals to the lock successfully. This is also common in built-up areas in cities.

If possible, find another parking space and try again. It may be necessary to lock your car from close range or lock it using a conventional key.

2. Dead Batteries

Fob keys use batteries to provide the power needed to operate car locks. Although the lithium button-cell batteries most commonly used for this purpose have long shelf lives and can function for up to 10 years, they’ll eventually wear out. Simply replacing a worn-out battery should be enough to regain access.

Alternatively, your car battery may be dead, causing the whole locking system to be unresponsive. If this is the case, use the physical key on your fob to open your doors. Contact a friend or a roadside assistance operator to give you a jump-start and drive your vehicle for at least half an hour to recharge the battery.

3. Contact Failure

You probably carry your car keys with you wherever you go, including in inclement weather. Ordinarily, fob keys can withstand surprising amounts of moisture and wear. However, water can penetrate the housing and cause the electrical contacts inside to corrode, causing the device to malfunction. Have a locksmith clean the contacts to restore the key to working order.
