Keys are one of the most commonly misplaced items. If you've dealt with lost keys more than once, you likely know the stress and anxiety of trying to track them down, not to mention the potential expense of replacing them. To help you minimize the hassle and cost, here are three tips for keeping them organized and secure.

How to Make Sure You Don't Lose Your Keys

1. Choose a Dedicated Spot

It seems like common sense, but many people forget that a designated place for keys will ensure they're easily accessible when they're needed. Knowing exactly where they are every time you leave the house can save time and provide peace of mind.

Choose a location that makes practical sense, such as in the entryway or near the door of the home you utilize the most. A key hook on the wall will save you space, but if you have a table or other surface available, a decorative bowl or plate can serve as a key receptacle. Get in the habit of placing them on the hook or in the receptacle whenever you enter the home. With a little practice, this will soon become second nature, and lost keys will be a thing of the past.

2. Streamline the Keyring

Having too many keys on a keyring can force you to sort through each one to locate the correct option for opening the door. This can be time-consuming and frustrating. Also, too many keys on a single ring can place stress on the ring itself, loosening it and increasing the likelihood of a lost key.

Take the time to declutter your keyring, and only keep the essentials you need for everyday tasks. Check that the ring is tight and secure, and replace it if necessary.

3. Keep Them Out of the Reach of Children

If you have little ones in the home, they'll naturally be curious about your keys. After all, they make a pleasant jingling sound and are the perfect size for little hands. However, keys can be dangerous for kids due to dirt, grime, sharp edges, and the possibility that they'll be able to unlock doors with them.

The dedicated key spot you choose should be safely out of reach for kids in the home. In this situation, a hook installed higher on the wall is probably a better choice than a tabletop receptacle.
