Fob keys use remote control technology to lock and unlock vehicles. They provide the functions of a standard key but do not require physical contact, which can make it more convenient to access and secure your automobile. Also known as keyless entry or remote central locking systems, they require batteries to function properly. Here's what to know about fob batteries and how to ensure your key continues operating dependably.

Battery Life Span

Battery life depends on the type of key. Smart fobs look nearly identical to traditional remote control keys but may lock and unlock doors from longer distances. Additionally, they contain receivers that communicate with vehicles more often. This gives them the ability to detect when you're near your car or truck and automatically unlock the door for your convenience.

However, these high-tech bonus features cause these keys to use more battery power, meaning they require replacement every two to three years. Traditional fob keys, on the other hand, typically last four to six years before needing fresh batteries.

Signs of Low Power

As fob keys lose battery power, they typically become weaker. This often causes the transmitter's range to be reduced, meaning you might need to get closer to your vehicle for the remote control functions to work. In some instances, your fob may stop working, requiring you to manually lock and unlock doors.

If your key starts your car or truck remotely, your vehicle might not recognize the key if it has low battery power, which can delay or inhibit starting. You may also notice a "low battery" message on the dashboard display.

Battery Replacement

To replace the battery, find the notch on the fob. It usually appears as a small gap along the edge or near the part where the emergency key slides out. A flathead screwdriver can be inserted into the notch to gently wedge it open.

You'll notice a round battery inside, which features markings that identify the type. Use your fingers to pop out the battery, and buy a replacement of the exact same type. Insert the new battery in place of the old one, and snap the fob's casing closed.
