Losing a loved one is always traumatic, but a life insurance policy can help reduce the financial pressure of their death, covering unexpected costs and allowing your family to mourn without worrying about money. If your spouse, parent, or other family member purchased coverage to care for those they left behind, you will need to contact the insurer to file a claim. Unfortunately, this can be complicated if you don’t know where the policy document is or which carrier is providing the coverage.

What to Do if You Can't Find Your Loved One's Life Insurance Policy

Don’t Wait to Hear From the Provider

Because life insurance companies don’t actively monitor public records, they have no way of knowing that the policyholder has passed. Therefore, even though it’s uncomfortable, we should all make time with our loved ones to discuss what arrangements they have in place and what their final wishes are—and to share the same information in return.

Find the Original Document

The original policy document will have all the information you need to file a claim. While most people try to keep these documents in a safe place, over the years they can often get moved or buried under other files. Start by searching their filing cabinets, the attic, or basement, and check to see whether they kept a safety deposit box in a bank. If so, you or the executor of the estate can access the box with a court order.

Check Digital Records

life insuranceMany people choose to keep digital rather than paper records, especially if they purchased the policy recently. If you have access to their computer or email, look for a PDF of the document, or at least a confirmation from the life insurance company. You may also want to check their iCloud®, Google Drive®, or any other cloud-based storage services your family member subscribed to.

Ask the Insurance Company

If you know which life insurance company your loved one used, they should be able to find the claim for you, but they will need a death certificate and proof of your own identity. If you’re unsure which insurer carries the policy, submit a query to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, who will ask several carriers to search their records on your behalf.
