Golf is traditionally a warm-weather pastime. If you’re tempted to head out to the green and wield your club during winter, you might wonder if it’s even possible. By following a few basic suggestions, you can easily enjoy your favorite sport even when temperatures plummet. Here’s what you should know.

How to Play Golf in the Winter

1. Dress for the Occasion

You can’t play comfortably if you aren’t dressed comfortably. Wear layers that you can easily remove if you start to feel too warm. Cover your head and ears with a protective cap and opt for a turtleneck or a long-sleeve shirt beneath a sweater. Finish with a lightweight coat or a jacket, depending on the conditions. You’ll also need a pair of golfing gloves to keep your hands warm while you grip the club, along with a pair of sturdy boots to keep your feet firmly on the ground.

2. Use a Yellow Ball

golfYellow golf balls exist for a specific purpose: They’re much easier to see when there’s a lot of ground cover competing for your attention on the course. Whether you swing the ball into a pile of leaves or it lands in a touch of frost, you’ll be able to see it more clearly than you would a traditional white ball.

Searching in vain for a white ball can also slow your progress significantly and wear you out unnecessarily, preventing you from enjoying a complete session.

3. Follow the Winter Rules

Sometimes clubs establish rules solely for winter play. For example, if water on the ground interferes with your potential to swing or putt when you’re standing in your usual position, you may take relief by positioning the ball in a different spot. However, this spot can’t be any closer to the hole than the original position.

Clubs may also require that players wipe down the balls if ground conditions are especially poor; dirt could affect the quality of play. In that case, you would need to mark the spot, clean the ball, then pick up where you left off.
