From clarifying shampoos to leave-in conditioners, there are various products you might use on your locks. Remember to check the ingredients label on each package, as some solutions contain additives that could affect your health. While most organic hair products don't rely on these ingredients, over-the-shelf options typically contain them. Here are a few names to watch out for when you browse the drugstore.

What Do Safe Hair Care Products Not Contain?

1. Diethanolamine

Diethanolamine (DEA) is a thickening agent that gives shampoos and conditioners their sudsy qualities. Cocamide DEA, which combines this agent with fatty acids from coconut oil, is a chemical associated with cancer development. DEA also mixes with other chemicals to form elements that increase the risk of liver, stomach, esophagus, or bladder cancer.

Instead, rely on naturally derived thickeners, such as guar gum or gelatin. These ingredients absorb water to increase viscosity without needing extra chemicals.

2. Formaldehyde

organic hair products

Formaldehyde is often used in Brazilian, keratin, and other hair-straightening formulas. Its gases are released when the products are activated with heat-based styling tools, and exposure can cause eye, throat, and nose irritation and increase the risk of developing leukemia or other cancers. While most products that contain this ingredient are labeled as potentially hazardous, there are numerous other chemicals that release it and don't require labeling.

To stay safe, choose products that smooth the hair with natural oils. For example, argan oil hydrates and straightens follicles because it contains antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and vitamin E.

3. Parabens

Parabens extend the shelf life of many cosmetics by preventing microorganisms from growing in the bottles. Parabens function similarly to estrogen in the body and have been linked to tumor growth in breast tissue

Fortunately, many products are now labeled as preservative- and paraben-free. Some organic hair products also contain phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin, which are safe plant-based alternatives.
