When you get professional hair coloring at a salon, it's natural to want to keep the new shade from fading too soon. Many factors can cause the hair color to fade or grow dull, but there are several steps you can take to protect your locks. Here are a few tips to make your new shade last as long as possible.

How to Make Your New Hair Color Last Longer

1. Wait to Wash

After the salon visit, you should wait as long as possible to wash your newly colored hair. For the best results, you should wait at least 24 hours, although 48 is ideal. Leaving the hair alone during this time allows the dye to settle into the strands. If you wash it too soon, some of the coloring may rinse out.

2. Shampoo Less

Even if you wait the right amount of time to clean your hair after the appointment, every wash after that will strip away a bit of your new hair color. While you may be used to shampooing your locks every day, you can keep the shade fresh for longer by doing it every two to three days.

If your hair gets greasy or limp between shampoo sessions, opt for dry shampoo. This product absorbs oil and odors while boosting shine and protecting color treatments.

3. Use Color-Safe Products

In addition to shampooing less, you should make sure to use color-safe shampoo and conditioner. Many shampoos contain sulfates, heavy-duty cleansing ingredients that remove color molecules.

Some brands also use alcohol, which has a stripping effect. In addition to sulfate- and alcohol-free products, you should consider a color-depositing shampoo, which adds a little hair color to your strands.

4. Limit Heat Styling

The heat from blow dryers, straighteners, and curling wands opens up the hair cuticles, allowing color to seep out. Heat styling also dries out and damages hair, leaving it more susceptible to uneven coloring during your next salon visit. Cut back on using these tools, and make sure to apply a thermal protectant whenever you dry, curl, or straighten your hair.
