Formaldehyde is a colorless gas used in many beauty products. The chemical prevents bacteria and fungi from growing in creams, liquids, and powders. Although the substance preserves products, it can also harm your health. Here's a closer look at why toxin-free, organic hair products and makeup are safer alternatives.

Do Hair Straighteners Contain Formaldehyde?

Brazilian blowouts, keratin treatments, and other hair-straightening solutions often list formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives in the ingredients. The toxic gas is released into the air when heat is applied to the product during the straightening process. When more than 0.1 ppm of the gas is in the air, exposure can cause eye, nose, and lung irritation.

It's also possible to absorb formaldehyde through the skin when using shampoos and gels that contain the preservative. Short-term exposure can cause scalp irritation and hair loss, while extended use can result in chronic headaches, respiratory problems, and contact dermatitis. As formaldehyde is a human carcinogen, high levels of exposure have also been linked to cancer.

Formaldehyde might not be listed on product packaging, so look for other commonly used names for the preservative, including quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, and imidazolidinyl urea. To prevent the health issues associated with the toxin, invest in organic hair products and chemical-free treatments at the salon.

How Do Cosmetics Release Formaldehyde?

Formaldehyde vapors are also released through makeup as the product breaks down on the face over time. For example, quaternium-15 is often found in eyeliners, pressed powders, and mascara.

In addition to eye irritation, exposure can also cause blisters, rashes, and new skin sensitivities to develop. Using organic makeup with natural preservatives, such as phenoxyethanol and sorbic acid, will prevent these concerns.

If you receive a manicure with nail polish that contains formaldehyde, you should wear a breathable mask during your visit to prevent inhaling the vapors and experiencing symptoms like dizziness or throat irritation. By finding a salon that uses organic products, you can avoid this concern altogether.
