Wedding Planning: Are Save-the-Dates Necessary?
There are many beautiful wedding traditions that are worth preserving. You always want to make sure you have something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue, but in this day and age, do you still need to send save-the-date cards? While tradition dictates affirmatively, there are a few reasons why you might want to hold off.
Wedding Size
The size of the group you expect at your wedding venue will largely affect the necessity of save-the-dates. If your wedding is 50 people or less, chances are you can get away with not sending save-the-dates—especially if your attendees are all very close friends and family. However, if you’re having a large celebration in an expansive venue, it’s probably a good idea to send save-the-dates to everyone. It never hurts to ensure that your guests are reminded of exactly when and where your event will be.
Destination Weddings
If you’re having a destination wedding, there is no getting out of sending save-the-dates. Typically, wedding planners recommend sending save-the-dates six to eight months in advance. But if you’re having a destination wedding, send a detailed card with all the important facts to your guests at least eight to ten months in advance. That way, your loved ones have plenty of time to book their travel plans and make arrangements at work.
Electronic Options
There is always the option of sending electronic save-the-dates—although it’s not as traditional, electronic save-the-dates are becoming more popular all the time. If you choose to go the electronic route, it’s a good idea to mention a general window if time in which your guests are likely to receive invitations so they can look for them in the mail.
