Children should visit the dentist for the first time when their first tooth comes in or before they turn 1-year-old. While this appointment can be overwhelming for many little ones, there are steps you can take to ensure your child has a positive experience and set them up for a lifetime of excellent oral health. Here's how you can get them ready for their first dental visit.

How to Prepare Your Child for the Dentist

1. Keep a Positive Attitude

Children often copy their parents’ attitudes and actions, so it’s important to talk about going to the dentist positively. Try to avoid negative terms like “it won’t be so bad” or “don’t be scared.”

While these words may be said in a positive context, the idea of being frightened or having a poor experience can give your child anxiety. Instead, try to use vocabulary like fun, exciting, and healthy to help your child look forward to the appointment.

2. Teach Them About the Dentist

Children will be less anxious about their visit if they have an idea of what to expect. You can teach your child about the dentist through books and TV shows. Many children’s videos and books show the main character going to the dentist and having a positive experience.

Another fun way to help your child feel comfortable is to act out a dental visit with them. They can pretend to be a patient and you the dentist so that they know what to expect.

3. Plan Your Visit

Part of preparing your child for the dentist is planning the visit in advance. Consider your child’s moods throughout the day and schedule accordingly. Are they cranky after their afternoon nap? If so, try to make the appointment for the morning.

You can also plan to bring a toy to the office. Children may feel more comfortable having their favorite blanket or stuffed animal with them to distract them from the unfamiliar situation. You or another adult your child is close to should accompany them to the exam room for comfort. If possible, coordinate the visit during a time off from work.
