Dry socket is the most common complication following tooth extraction procedures, specifically when it comes to wisdom teeth and molars. Extractions are very safe operations, and dry sockets only occur in 1.8% of patients. To help prevent this uncomfortable dental condition, use this guide to learn what to do to protect your gums and mouth after having a tooth pulled.

What Is Dry Socket?

Dry socket, also known as alveolar osteitis, is a condition where a blood clot dislodges, dissolves, or fails to form properly after a tooth extraction. When a tooth is removed, the body creates a blood clot to protect bone and nerves in the gum tissue where the tooth used to be. The coagulation allows new bone to develop under it or soft tissue to grow over it. However, when this protective layer is removed or never develops, the hole in your gums is exposed and can cause intense pain along the face and jaw that results in dry socket.

This condition is problematic because the raw tissue can become inflamed and collect food and debris that is harmful to the wound and entire oral cavity. Dry socket typically appears one to three days after the extraction. Common symptoms include nerve pain radiating anywhere from the temple to the neck, visibility of bone in the socket, bad breath, or an unpleasant taste in your mouth.

How Can You Prevent It?

While you may not always be able to prevent dry socket, proper oral care can increase your chances of a successful procedure. Prior to your appointment, avoid smoking and tobacco products since these can slow the healing process. Ask your dentist if any medications you are taking, including contraceptives, will inhibit clot formation or disrupt healing.

After the extraction, avoid activities that could cause oral trauma and aggressive brushing that could knock the clot out of place. Steer clear of straws, and eat soft foods that require little chewing. Practice good oral hygiene to prevent germs and oral infections. Your dentist may suggest rinsing the first day and gently brushing the next, alongside an antibacterial mouthwash.
