While not a leak in the traditional sense, condensation in your attic space can still cause water damage and other issues. These issues occur due to improper insulation, resulting when the cold outside air interacts with the warm atmosphere in your attic. While it’s best to consult with a roofing contractor to fix the problem permanently, the following are few ways to prevent attic condensation.

4 Ways to Prevent Condensation in the Attic

1. Improve Insulation

Your attic must be evenly heated, which can be accomplished by proper insulation. When choosing insulation, look for a higher R-value—the rating metric of insulation quality—which should be between R-30 and R-60 depending on how cold your area gets. You’ll also need to choose between different types of insulation, such as spray foam and blanket. Spray foam is made from polyurethane and expands wherever it is applied within your attic. Blanket insulation is typically made from fiberglass or wool and must be nailed into your attic space.

2. Increase Ventilation

roofing contractorVenting in your roof allows for proper airflow in your attic. If there is an issue with your vents’ design, or they’re blocked for some reason, it will impede the proper flow of air. For example, soffit vents can sometimes be blocked by twigs or branches, or by an animal nest if your roof has been intruded by wildlife. If a pest has ruined your vents and insulation, contact a roofing contractor for repairs.

3. Install a Dehumidifier

If humidity levels in your attic are still too high after the previous measures have been taken, a dehumidifier may be necessary. These devices pull excess moisture out of the air and prevent more from collecting within your attic. Dehumidifiers must be emptied of the water they’ve collected, but some models are designed with an automatic drain for greater convenience.

4. Decrease Moisture Being Added

Additional moisture is automatically added to the attic in every home via everyday activities, such as showering and cooking. The heat that’s generated by appliances and plumbing fixtures rises into the attic and gets trapped there. Also, some homes have a bathroom vent fan or stove-hood that’s directed to the attic, increasing the moisture that gets stuck there. In these situations, homeowners should look into having those sources directed outside instead so that the heat can be released from the home.
