Getting to Know Harry Ahysen

Early Life

Harry Ahysen was born on September 6, 1928, in Port Arthur, TX. He received his undergraduate from the University of Houston and his Master’s in Fine Arts from the University of Texas. In addition to his work as an artist, he was also a well-known musician and played trumpet in the Harry James Band, whom he traveled with during the 1940s. He spent most of his life painting, teaching, and writing. He met his wife, Alice, in 1971 and had a daughter named Susan.

Career 

He was named the State Artist of Texas in 1980 and 1981 before moving to Washington Court House, OH, in 1986. He taught for 31 years at in the art department of Sam Houston State University Huntsville, TX, before retiring in 1994. Most notably, seven of his works are a part of the Coast Guard Collection, and his captivating, colorful murals can be seen all throughout Fayette County. Art enthusiasts can also find his pieces in a variety of collections and museums all across the globe.

Final Days

Ahysen passed away on April 30, 2006, but his works are immortalized all over Fayette County. They stand as a beautiful memorial to his talent and servitude to his community. His wife, Alice, and daughter, Susan, still reside in Washington Court House OH.
