Manufacturers offer a variety of water treatment options for industrial facilities, each of which may be ideally suited for different applications. While their goal is to remove toxic chemicals, minerals, and other contaminants, the best system for your plant depends on the quality of your water supply and the demands of your particular industry. Understanding how each of these processes work will help ensure you get the purest water possible.

What Kind of Water Treatment Is Best for You?

1. Ion Exchange

Unlike other water treatment methods, ion exchange is not intended to remove particles and dangerous microorganisms. Instead, this process is used to remove ions and minerals from the water before it goes through other treatments. This process is powered by special beads, which naturally exchange ions with molecules in the water, effectively removing most dissolved solids.

2. Reverse Osmosis

water treatmentReverse osmosis is popular in the bottled water and food manufacturing industries, thanks to its low cost and relative efficiency. In a reverse osmosis system, hydraulic pressure forces water through a semipermeable membrane capable of removing 90%-95% of contaminants, including microorganisms, radioactive particles, heavy metals, and salts. However, the outflow is generally limited to a certain quantity of water per day, which may not be enough for resource-intensive facilities.

3. Brine System Treatment

Many industrial processes generate by-products of highly concentrated salts, also known as brine. Because these materials can be extremely difficult to remove from wastewater, many facilities require multi-step systems for distillation. If your facility produces brine, consult with a water treatment specialist to ensure these solids are removed completely.
