While running is a great way to stay in shape, it can do a number on your feet. That’s why podiatrists recommend taking the following steps to preserve the health of your feet, whether you’re a weekend jogger or a dedicated marathon runner.

3 Ways to Take Care of Your Feet

1. Purchase Reliable Running Shoes

While running shoes can be expensive, they’re worth the investment. The right shoes offer ample support, preventing painful blisters, corns, and callouses. They also protect your ankles from sprains and strains. When shopping, look for shoes that are snug but not too tight. If you have questions, ask your podiatrist for recommendations.

2. Inspect Your Feet

podiatristEven with the right footwear, you may still develop blisters. In this case, inspect your feet often to make sure they’re healthy and free of infections. Wash broken skin with soap and treat it with an antibiotic ointment before covering it with a sterile bandage. If you’re experiencing issues with healing, visit your podiatrist right away for more advanced treatment.

3. Keep Your Feet Dry

Feet exposed to too much moisture may develop foot fungus, a condition that plagues many runners. Avoid cotton socks if running, and instead opt for materials that wick moisture away from feet. Synthetic materials like polyester and acrylic are good choices. After showering, make sure your feet are completely dry before putting your shoes on. While it’s important that you moisturize your feet, be sure to remove any excess moisturizer before wearing shoes, especially between your toes. If you’re experiencing itching or redness on your feet, consult your podiatrist for treatment.
