Ankle sprains vary in severity, but the goal of recovery is always the same: to reduce pain and swelling, heal the ligament, and return your ankle to full, normal function. Severe sprains may require the care of a foot specialist. Follow these tips for the most efficient recovery.

How to Help Your Ankle Sprain Heal Faster

1. Rest

To speed healing of strains or sprains, get off your ankle as soon as possible after the injury. And avoid further activities that cause pain or force you to put weight on the injured area.

2. Ice

Use an ice pack, a zipper storage baggie full of ice, or a package of frozen peas to cool the injury area. The cold helps reduce swelling and may temporarily relieve pain. Ice your ankle for 15-20 minutes at a time and repeat several times during waking hours. If you have neuropathy or decreased sensation in your feet, consult a foot specialist before using ice.

3. Use Compressionfoot specialist

Wrap an elastic bandage firmly around your ankle to help reduce swelling. Start the wrap at the area farthest from the heart. If you experience numbness or a feeling of pins and needles, loosen it slightly; the wrap is too tight and is cutting off your circulation.

4. Elevate

Swelling is caused by excess fluid gathering in the area of the sprain. Elevate your ankle to help move the fluid and reduce swelling, especially when sleeping or sitting for long periods.

5. See a Foot Specialist

A sprain that seems excessively painful or doesn’t show clear signs of healing within two to three days may require the care of a doctor. See a podiatrist or other foot specialist to make sure there are no broken bones or complications.
