If your nails are discolored, thickened, and crumbling, you probably have a fungal infection. Nail fungus is a relatively common condition that can affect one or more nails on the fingers or toes. As long as the infection is mild, it doesn't require treatment. If your nails become painful, distorted, ragged, or pungent, however, visit a podiatrist. Below learn how your provider might treat the infection and how you can prevent issues in the future.

Treating Nail Fungus

The most effective approach for any given patient will depend on the severity of the infection. After determining the extent of the condition, your doctor might prescribe an oral anti-fungal drug or a topical remedy like a medicated polish or cream. Oral treatments tend to clear infections faster than topical modalities. However, it could still be months before you see any results because of the rate at which nails grow.

For especially severe or stubborn infections, surgery is also an option. Doctors can remove the nail temporarily and apply an anti-fungal medication directly to the affected nail bed. In some circumstances, permanent nail removal may be warranted.

Preventing Nail Fungus

nail fungusReduce the risk of developing a fungal infection in your nails by implementing various lifestyle habits. For example, since fungus thrives in a warm, moist environment, wear breathable shoes and keep your feet clean and dry at all times. If necessary, change your socks throughout the day. Wearing adequate footwear in pools and locker rooms will also limit exposure to fungi. If you ever get your nails done, only visit salons that sterilize their tools between clients.
