Pressure washers are among the most common equipment rentals, and for good reason. While these machines are useful for large-scale exterior cleaning, you’re unlikely to use them frequently. One popular project ideal for pressure washers is cleaning your home’s vinyl siding. Here’s what you’ll need to do.

A Guide to Pressure Washing Your Siding

1. Prepare Yourself and Your Area

It’s possible some small debris could dislodge while pressure washing, so stay safe by wearing long sleeves and pants, goggles, and closed-toed shoes. Remove any trip hazards in your work area and make sure your windows are tightly shut. Cover plants, vents, and outlets to prevent overspray. Finally, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for adding detergent to the tank. Many equipment rental centers will provide the booklet with the equipment, but if not, be sure to ask which solution is best to use. Often, they’ll recommend a detergent designed specifically for pressure washers.

2. Apply the Detergent

Next, apply the detergent to your home’s siding using low pressure and smooth, even strokes. Start from the top and work your way down to avoid streaks. Never point the nozzle upward, which can force water between the slats and defeat the purpose of the siding.

While the pressure washer and detergent will likely be enough to remove most surface dirt, you may need to use a special attachment to scrub away mildew or other grime. If your siding is especially dirty, inquire about rotating or utility brush attachments at the equipment rental center.

3. Wait and Rinse

After the detergent has been applied, allow it to sit on your siding for five to 10 minutes. This will allow it to break down the dirt, mildew, and other grime. Just don’t allow it to dry completely, as it could create a thick paste that may be difficult to remove. For this reason, it’s best to work in small batches.

Once you’ve allowed the solution to sit for at least five minutes, rinse the siding using a low-pressure setting. Be sure to stand at least 5 feet away; otherwise, the pressurized water could damage the finish on your vinyl siding. Remember to keep the wand pointed downward to avoid causing moisture damage. Continue until all of the dirt and soap have been washed away.
