When the time comes to move out of your student housing, you will be responsible for leaving it spotless. A thorough cleaning will ensure you get the full amount of the security deposit back that you deserve. Outside the normal tasks, such as dusting and vacuuming, you will need to take on a few often-forgotten chores in areas that your property management company will likely inspect.

A Move-Out Cleaning Checklist for Residents of Student Housing

1. Clean the Carpets

You may not think they need it, but we recommend having your carpets professionally cleaned prior to moving out. There ar several carpet cleaning companies in the local area.

2. Clean the Windows

Remove the screens from the windows, and wipe down both sides with a glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Use a wet paper towel or rag to get dirt, grime, and dead bugs out of the frame's tracks. Dust the blinds, as well.

3. Fridge and Freezer

The day before your move, pull all food out of the refrigerator and freezer, and place perishables in a cooler. Unplug the appliance, and leave the doors open for about 24 hours so all frost buildup in the freezer can melt.

Use a disinfectant and rag to clean the outside and inside of the fridge. Wash out the drawers and scrub the shelves, as well. If the unit is a stainless steel model, use a material-appropriate cleaner since they don't leave streaks. Once it is clean, be sure to plug it back in!

4. Wipe All Cabinetry

Empty all kitchen drawers and cabinets as you pack. Use disinfectant wipes to clean out the shelving in closets and pantries. Don't forget to check and wipe out any under-sink cupboards in the kitchen and bathrooms.

5. Tackle Bathrooms & Floors

The bathrooms will be used, and the floors will continue to get dirty as you're packing and carrying boxes out to the car and moving truck. Keep your cleaning supplies separate so you can tackle these areas last. Scrub the toilets and sinks, and sweep and mop the floors on your way out of the house.
