Cooking is a rewarding task, but it can quickly get messy—especially on a propane grill. To protect your health and improve the taste of food cooked on your grill, you'll want to know how to clean it after use. Since it's a little more complicated than cleaning regular kitchen appliances, here's a guide to help you get the job done.
How to Clean Your Propane Grill
1. Gather Supplies
To thoroughly clean your propane grill, you'll need a variety of tools, including a grill brush and stainless steel wipes made from cotton or microfiber to remove grime from the surface. You should have a bucket or bowl of warm water ready with dish soap, as well as work gloves, paper towels, and a trash can nearby. To prepare for cleaning, turn off the grill and disconnect the propane tank as an important safety precaution. Finally, lay a sheet of aluminum foil on top of the heating elements at the bottom to catch the debris that you scrub off.
2. Wash Interior Parts Separately
Each separate component of your propane grill needs individual attention. The grill plates and metal plates underneath them will be covered in grime that won't come off easily unless softened, so it's helpful to soak them in a bucket or bowl of soapy water while you handle other parts. Disconnect the venturi tube to let it soak, as well.
Use the grill brush to scrub the burners and underside of the hood, then wipe up the debris with a damp paper towel. You can remove the drip pan to dispose of the grease in the trash can as needed. The dirty aluminum foil at the bottom can be thrown away too, and then you can clean the heating elements with a brush.
At this point, the plates and venturi tube should be soaked enough. Scrub the grime off the plates with the brush and then rinse them with the garden hose before putting them back on the grill. If the tube is clogged, clear it with the tube brush, then hose it down and reconnect it.
3. Clean Exterior Last
Now that the interior of your propane grill is clean, you can take care of the exterior. A stainless steel grill should be cleaned with wipes designed specifically for the material. If your grill is ceramic or cast iron, dip a cotton cloth in soapy water to wash the surface and then dry it off with a different cotton or microfiber cloth.
