Propane plays a central role in how you use your recreational vehicle. It supplies an energy source for the furnace, refrigerator, kitchen, and other components, allowing you to enjoy long trips on the road. To better understand your vehicle and its fuel needs, learn more about propane RV systems below.

What You Need to Know About Propane & RVs

How does this fuel system work?

The fuel is housed in a high-pressure tank. When a propane-utilizing appliance is turned on, the fuel flows out of the tank into the regulator. The regulator controls the movement of gas from the tank to the appliance that is using the fuel, reducing the gas to a low-pressure flow. Many RV drivers also install a T-fitting between the tank and the regulator so they can attach an additional tank or another propane accessory for additional fuel.

How can I tell if the tank is running low?

You don't have to wait until your appliances stop working to order fuel refills. Get in the habit of checking the tank gauge every few days. These gauges measure fuel levels and display three different readings: good, low, and empty. When you receive a low reading, it's time to place an order with a propane distributor.

How much propane does my RV need?

propane

There is no one definitive answer to this, as every RV driver has different needs and uses their vehicle and its systems in different ways. However, each gallon of fuel equals 91,500 BTUs, so check the BTU ratings of your appliances—these can be found in the owner's manual or on the side of the appliance—and divide the BTU capacity of the tank by the BTU usage of a specific gas appliance in the RV to determine how much you will need.

Should I keep my tank turned off while driving my RV?

Turn off the tank whenever you're driving your RV to lower the risk of dangerous gas-related accidents while on the road. If you're concerned about food spoiling in the refrigerator, most RV fridges are tightly sealed and will hold in cold air for several hours, so food shouldn't be affected.
