Check for leaks in the tubing.

Look for leaks before lighting the grill with either a leak-detection solution or soapy water. To use soapy water, dip a cloth in the soap and water solution and place it on the tubing. If it bubbles, it’s an indication of a leak, and you should avoid using the grill. Don’t try to fix leaks yourself. Instead, replace the tank with a new one. Never check for leaks with matches or lighters.

Keep propane tanks off the floor.

Moisture easily gets transferred to the tank if you store it on the floor. This eventually leads rust, which could potentially end with a propane leak. Instead, store tanks off the ground on elevated flat surfaces that will not burn or collect water. 

Don’t:

Store propane tanks in enclosed spaces.

If any vapors escape the tank, it’s important to ensure it’s in a ventilated space. Enclosed spaces allow escaped vapors to build up and could lead to a potential explosion. Always make sure the valve is closed and the opening is capped, and keep tanks out of garages and homes. During transport, do not put the tank in the trunk of your car.

Expose tank to heat.

Exposure to heat from either fire or prolonged sunshine can cause your tank to explode. Keep it in an area that will not exceed 120 degrees.

Set tanks on their sides.

It’s important that propane tanks are always placed and stored in the upright position. Should the safety valve open when a tank is placed on its side, liquid could escape rather than vapors, which is much more dangerous.
