Whether you are a serious collector or you have a few albums you want to cherish for as long as possible, understanding how to store vinyl records properly is critical for preserving them. Below, learn more about a few key steps you can take to ensure your albums are safe.

What’s the Right Way to Store Vinyl Albums?

1. Proper Handling Techniques

Every time you handle your vinyl records, make sure your hands are clean and dry. Touch only the edges or the area with the label. Putting your hands on the grooves not only leaves behind fingerprints but also transfers oils from your skin to the record, which can damage it.

2. Album Jackets

3. Clean Surface

Before slipping the record back into its jacket, wipe it with a record cleaning brush. Never use clothing as this can scratch and damage the LP. Hold the brush and spin the record slowly to remove dust. For deeper cleaning, use a cleaning solution designed specifically for vinyl and a microfiber cloth twice a year. Spray the vinyl and move the cloth in a circular motion to remove buildup.

4. Upright Storage

Never stack your records on top of each other as this can warp, scuff, and crack vinyl. Instead, store them upright in a crate. Make sure they’re not slanted since this will also bend the record. You can purchase dividers that will help them stay straight.

5. Temperature Control

Always keep your record collection away from direct heat and light. Store them in a space that is consistently 65 to 70 degrees and at a humidity level between 45% to 50%. Temperature extremes and humidity will damage, warp, and degrade your albums.
